Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are unique dental treatment methods that are used to restore damaged teeth. While they are slightly more intricate than a standard dental filling, they are designed to preserve more of the tooth’s original structure than a full dental crown. After receiving an inlay or an onlay, a tooth will typically be stronger than before, and the majority of its original structure and integrity will be kept intact.

The oral care specialists at Dental Implants Today are proud to provide patients with inlays and onlays that offer both a natural look and great function. We custom build all of our inlays and onlays using 3D scans of a patient’s teeth. This ensures that their new inlay or onlay will fit and function well.

Inlays

An inlay consists of filling material that is bonded to the inner area of a tooth’s chewing surface but does not cover any of the tooth’s cusps or points. Instead, an inlay will only cover the area inside these points. Inlays are generally used when a tooth cannot be repaired with a standard filling, but applying a complete dental crown would be considered excessive. With their custom fit, teeth that have been treated with inlays are usually stronger than teeth that have been repaired with normal fillings.

Onlays

Unlike an inlay, an onlay will cover at least one of the tooth’s cusps. In fact, these points are usually where the onlay is bonded to the tooth. In some situations, an onlay may even cover the entire chewing surface of a tooth. Onlays will usually leave teeth stronger than before. This makes the procedure a great treatment method for teeth that cannot be fixed with standard fillings, but a full dental crown.
