Teeth Extraction

When a tooth is causing serious problems for other structures in the mouth, or when a tooth is severely damaged and it cannot be salvaged, the best course of action may be to remove it. While no one wants to lose a tooth, the experts at Dental Implants Today will work carefully to ensure that a necessary extraction goes as smoothly as possible. This way, you will be able to focus on improving your oral health and replacing the tooth after the procedure.

Once we make the necessary preparations, the actual removal process is usually relatively simple. Most patients experience little-to-no pain as the tooth is being pulled; however, it is very common to feel some pressure in the area during this time. After the tooth has been taken out, our top priority is to initiate the healing process as quickly as we can. This is done by having the patient bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. Doing this will allow a blood clot to form at the extraction site. Once the blood clot has been formed, the patient must be very careful not to disturb it in any way. This means to avoid using a straw, rinsing vigorously, smoking, consuming drugs or alcohol and participating in intensive exercise for at least 24 hours after the tooth has been removed.

Many patients will experience swelling after a tooth has been removed. We recommend using an icepack to address this problem. Most of the time, a patient can continue with their usual brushing and flossing practices just 24 hours after the procedure. In the event that intense pain or uncontrollable bleeding occurs after a tooth extraction, the patient should contact our office immediately.

Dental Implants Today also provides wisdom teeth removals. Sometimes called the third molars, a person’s wisdom teeth will typically develop when they are in their late teens or early twenties. Although some people do end up keeping their wisdom teeth permanently, this is relatively uncommon due to the fact that wisdom teeth tend to grow at a severe angle, and there is almost no space available for them inside the mouth.

Removing a person’s wisdom teeth is generally a more involved procedure than a standard tooth extraction. The recovery time for a wisdom teeth removal procedure is usually about one week; however, this length of time can vary depending upon the healing tendencies of the patient and how severely their wisdom teeth were impacted prior to their removal. As the healing process occurs, patients can expedite recovery by getting lots of rest, consuming plenty of fluids and eating only soft foods. Further instructions regarding the recovery process will be provided.
